(Thermometer...)     Dear Colleague,

The 4th International Workshop on Cardiac Mechano-Electric Feedback and Arrhythmias, Oxford 1-4 April 2007, has ended. The meeting was attended by over 80 scientists, physicians and modellers from 15 countries and 4 continents. We jointly addressed the current state of play in basic research into mechano-reception and clinical studies into mechanical effects on cardiac activity, and discussed the use of a large variety of experimental and theoretical techniques for the study of mechanical effects on heart rate and rhythm. This was done in 28 lectures, 8 poster talks, 24 poster presentations, and well over 5 hours of discussion time during the daily sessions. As a result, we identified new targets for research, raised awareness of current possibilities and pitfalls of studying cardiac mechano-reception from molecule to man, and set ourselves up for what we would hope to be a 'new wave' of research into cardiac mechano-electric interactions and arrhythmias.

For more detailed information please refer to the meeting's Proceedings booklet, which is available on-line.

Furthermore, we are in the process of compiling a focussed issue of Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology, which will provide more detailed insight into the subject of the workshop (a copy of this volume will be mailed to each participant). Also, you can have a look at the findings of our participants' feedback and photographs.

We would like to end by thanking all attendees for their contribution in making this workshop such a success. Particular thanks go to our presenters who did a marvellous job and our sponsors (listed below) without whom we would not have been able to conduct this meeting.

'Until the next one' I remain with the best wishes from the Organising Committee,

    Peter Kohl.
